Baker Charitable Trust

History

Long way to go...
We have made great strides towards our objectives but we still have a long way to go. God has blessed us with a beautiful land with many natural advantages. However, the effects of poverty, difficult terrain, natural disasters, insensitive modernisation and now the uncertainties of the global market place have combined to give us a real challenge.

With God's help, we work extremely hard to serve our people. We supply food and shelter for the poor, provide primary health care for tribal children, run educational Trust and run self help programmes for the weaker, neglected and displaced members of our society. All this we do through our local efforts and with the wonderful help of our friends.

   History of Henry Baker Jr...

Rev. Henry Baker, Sr. was one of the First C.M.S. Missionaries in Kerala. His eldest son, Henry Baker, Jr. was born in Kerala, studied and ordained in England and came back to Kerala as a missionary.

After completing his work among the hill arrians Henry Baker Jr. left the hill. He was old, weak and sick. The believers from the area also escorted him from the hills to the valley. When they reached the valley, Henry Baker looked back. He saw the fruits of his labor on the hills in the form of churches and Christian homes. He prayed for God's protection on them. They all went. He embraced each one who had followed him down to the valley. Then he lifted up his hands and blessed his children. He departed from that place on horse back. The place where he stood and blessed the people later became the headquarters of the C.S.I. East Kerala Diocese which was formed in 1982.

His Mission...
Baker started his mission in melukavu in the year 1852. Melakavu is situated in the Kottayam district of Kerala. Melukavu is a hilly area. Baker started his mission in melukavu for the Renaissance of Hill arrians. The hill arrians took the initiative, went to the missionary and begged for the enlightment of the gospel. Henry Baker was there to help. He was with the people, where they were, he understood and identified with them. Baker sent teachers for them, yet he made the process a movement of the people, the new converts. Therefore, the whole area between Mundakayam and Kannickal was evangelized in this manner.
